The assault on Christian employees’ rights has dramatically increased. For Christian teachers in government-run schools, censorship has been growing even faster.
Here are 6 things you should know:
#1. Teacher rights violated… She was fired for her faith
A high school teacher in Loudoun County, North Virginia was fired for not removing a Bible verse from their work email signature.
The teacher had the quote from John 3:16 in her email signature, for years. The quote was “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
When the district’s acting superintendent saw it, he objected and asked the teacher to remove the quote. The teacher offered to change it to Proverbs 22:6, which states, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
The Superintendent claims that the emails are sent from a school employee and “constitute school sponsored speech bearing the ostensible endorsement of the school Division.”
#2. Does John 3:16 violate the Constitution?
According to the school district’s stance avoids “a violation of the First Amendment establishment clause which bars government from favoring one religion over another. The district’s determination is not based on any particular religious viewpoint and would be made with respect to any religious expression, incorporated in an employee’s email signature.”
Liberty Counsel Founder and Chairman Mat Staver, responded to the district’s statement saying, “Loudoun County Public Schools cannot
discriminate against a teacher who wants to use a Bible verse in her signature when other teachers are including nonreligious quotes.”
Regarding the email signature, would the school district establish a religion by permitting an employee to use a verse from the Bible? Or is it prohibiting the free exercise thereof?
#3. The school district is wrong, Constitutionally the teacher can use John 3:16
This can all be boiled down to the 1st Amendment of the Constitution, which states that “Congress shall make no law respecting and establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”
According to a recent Supreme Court ruling, in the case of a high school football coach who prayed on the field after a game, with the team was constitutional. (We covered this in our article The War on Religious Liberty: 3 Things You Should Know.)
[Click HERE to listen to this podcast with Craig and Keisha Russell, a constitutional lawyer at First Liberty Institute.]There was also another Supreme Court case where the court ruled that Boston unconstitutionally refused a request to fly a Christian flag on City Hall when hundreds of other similar requests were granted.
#4. This court case is about protecting our 1st Amendment rights
The 1st Amendment gives us all the right to free speech and freedom of religion.
Liberty Counsel sent a letter to Acting Superintendent Daniel Smith claiming that the school district “violated both the First Amendment and its own school district policy prohibiting religious discrimination.” They demanded that the teacher be permitted “to restore the Bible verse to her email signature block.”
#5. This teacher is brave and courageous to stand up for what is right
It’s not easy to stand apart from the crowd and do what’s right, especially when you are at odds with your employer.
How many people would risk getting fired to stand up for their rights?… Not many.
It takes a special kind of courage, and this teacher should be applauded for standing up for what’s right.
#6. A reflection of our post Christian culture: freedom of religion vs freedom to worship
We are facing a crisis in our culture and Christian rights protecte
d by the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Religion is being forced into the shadows—We’re free to worship, just don’t tell us about it, or anyone else. Do it personally.
This is where the radical secularists support “Freedom” to worship, but they oppose freedom of religion where you can declare and share your faith.
To the superintendent and the school district, religion is akin to superstition… ancient mythology, no different than believing in the Greek or Roman gods, or in some other pagan superstitions. The radical Socialists claim that the Constitution says there is to be a “separation of church and state” is false and a misinterpretation of the meaning.
The Founding Fathers did not intend to take religion out of the public square. Separation of church and state means that the Church shall not be a ruling body and will not make public policies, laws, or rule the people. Conversely, the state will not infringe upon our right to worship whatever religion we want or how to worship.
It does not mean we must separate faith from individuals in government or society.
For example:
- Congress starts its sessions with a morning prayer
- We swear on a Bible that we will tell the truth in court
- Our money has “In God we Trust” on it
- Every president swears on the Bible when they take their oath of office
- Every Congressperson and Senator swears on the Bible when they take their oath of office
- Every courthouse has the Ten Commandments engraved on a wall or monument.
- And our Constitution outlines our “God given” rights
Our Constitution guarantees anyone, anytime, can express, share, and declare their personally held convictions. It’s fundamental to our freedoms.
Pray for this teacher and that her fundamental rights are protected.
Do you support this teacher’s 1st Amendment rights?

Election Forum claims: We swear on a Bible that we will tell the truth in court
“Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MN) was recently sworn in to Congress using the Quran instead of the Bible. Conservatives and liberals were aflutter with opposing opinions that either blasted or praised the Muslim woman for her audacity or bravery, depending on which side of the fence the apple falls. Is Tlaib’s use of the Quran really the issue, or is the problem the woman herself?
History records several instances of politicians using something other than the Bible.
Bibles Weren’t Always Used
No law or policy requires members of Congress to swear in using the Bible or any other text. In fact, if they so choose, they could hold a personal diary, a romance novel, or even a comic book for the ceremony. Article VI, clause 3 of the U.S. Constitution states that members “… ‘shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States’.”
