Ludwig von Mises How Renato Moicano Just Made Him the Most Famous Economist

Ludwig von Mises?

He is one of the most important economists who helped improve the world.

Renato Moicano?

He’s a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist.

In one statement, he helped promote freedom, economic sanity, and a path to a booming economy for millions.

Let me explain.

Here are 5 things every American should know…

1) What Renato said that sparked a massive controversy

Moicano had just won his fight during the UFC 300. When asked to comment on his win, he grabbed the mic and talked about his favorite economist, Ludwig von Mises.

“I love private property, and let me tell you something: If you care about your country, read Ludwig von Mises and the six lessons of the Austrian economic school,” Moicano said.

Moicano’s love of von Mises stems from a growing movement in Brazil’s universities, political circles, and among citizens to move away from socialism and toward free market capitalism.

2) Media Superstar, Charles Payne

Charles Payne is among Fox Business’s best investment/economy commentators and authors today.

He recently interviewed mixed martial artist Renato Moicano on the air— And it was powerful.

Charles had Moicano on his program because the fighter talked about Ludwig von Mises, the father of modern free-market economics.

Since the interview and Moicano’s statements, hundreds of thousands of people worldwide have searched the internet for information on von Mises.

They can’t stop discussing it after discovering von Mises’ powerful work.

3) My meeting with Dr. von Mises

The photo above shows me holding Human Action, one of von Mises’ books that I still have from college.

I met Dr. von Mises during his speech at Long Beach State in 1969 while still in high school.

I’ll never forget how powerful it was. Over 200 students were there, listening to this brilliant economist who understood the value of freedom and the evils of government power over individual lives.

After the lecture, I joined some organizers, my old friends Dana Rohrabacher and Sean Steel, at Dana’s apartment. There were around 20 people in Dana’s tiny apartment listening to Dr. von Mises for another few hours and asking questions.

Meeting and interacting with him was a lasting memory.

4) How Moicano made von Mises a modern economic hero

Renato Moicano, after winning UFC 300 and gaining worldwide popularity, gave a speech about von Mises and talked about von Mises’ book Lessons on Austrian Economics.

Monicano told Fox Business host Charles Payne that he read Mises’ book after his big win when the government taxed him on his money.

“They wanted to take most of my money, so I realized I had to learn and understand about money,” Monicano said. Through my research, I found out about the Austrian School of Economics and all these great economists and their theories. It’s very important to know to maintain a free market society.”

According to Monicano, Von Mises’s values include “being a brilliant economist and writing in a way that’s easy to understand. He has amazing concepts that I wanted to share with the world. In Brazil, they sold 26,000 copies of Mises’ book a few days after I made my speech,” said Monicano.

Monicano also spoke about his love for the United States, its Constitution, its Founding Fathers, its free market, and its freedom of speech. “I think Americans take it for granted,” he said.

Monicano told Payne that he thinks “interest rates will keep going up” and wants his next purse paid out in Bitcoin. “The dollar keeps losing value because of the government spending and printing money, which will benefit Bitcoin.”

5) Von Mises’ Writings You Should Know

Von Mises’ first major work was The Theory of Money and Credit (1912). In it, he outlined monetary theory and systematically integrated the fields of micro and macroeconomics for the first time, creating a better understanding of why capitalism works.

In 1920, he wrote Economic Calculation in the Socialist Commonwealth. It created a huge debate that challenged socialism.

But his book, Human Action, literally changed the world of economics.

Sadly, most today are ignorant of Von Mises. They know Karl Marx and John Keynes. But not the great Von Mises.

In Human Action, Von Mises wrote:

“There is no means by which anyone can evade his personal responsibility. Whoever neglects to examine to the best of his abilities all the problems involved voluntarily surrenders his birthright to a self-appointed elite of supermen. In such vital matters, blind reliance upon ‘experts’ and uncritical acceptance of popular catchwords and prejudices is tantamount to abandoning self-determination and yielding to other people’s domination. As conditions are today, nothing can be more important to every intelligent man than economics. His own fate and that of his progeny is at stake.”

Economics is not a specialty for economists.

Economics involves every aspect of society’s challenges and problems. It offers solutions for political and normal human interactions. It concerns everyone and belongs to all. It is the main and proper study of every citizen.”

Incidentally, next to my copy of Human Action on my living room bookshelf is:

  • Free to Choose: A Personal Statement by the great Milton Friedman.
  • Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt.
  • The Road to Serfdom by Friedrich Hayek
  • and Modern Economics by Dr. Mark Skousen for a good overview of the above works

Von Mises laid the foundation for economic understanding and sanity.

I’m glad people are discovering the works of the great Ludwig von Mises!
