The Olympics Double Standard

Over 28 million people enjoyed this year’s Olympics.

However, the opening ceremony show mocking Leonardo da Vinci’s “Last Supper” was blasphemous, offensive, and a direct assault on Christian values.

There was no apology, only excuses that made no sense (see our article: Olympics Backlash: Mockery of Last Supper Offends 2.4 billion Christians – 10 Things You Should Know).

However, during the Olympics, what did the Christian athletes do?

The answer is that, unlike past Olympic games, Christian athletes were prohibited from displaying their faith.

They could not wear or display crosses or show anything that would identify them as Christians.

A strict enforcement of rules against Christian imagery accompanied the double standard.

According to the official rules, “no type of political, religious, racial demonstration or propaganda is permitted in the Olympic venue based upon Article 50 of the Olympic charter… which are strictly enforced.”

So, Christians either were silent, not displaying their faith openly or if they did, they had to back down.

For example:

Brazilian surfer João Chianca said he had to remove a picture of Jesus from his surfboard to avoid being disqualified from the competition. They told me that “Christ is a religious figure” and “the games have strict rules that focus on total neutrality.”

Brazilian skateboarder Rayssa Leal was creative and unique in what she did, using sign language to quote John 14:6:

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Few people at the Olympics knew what she signed until it went out on social media, becoming a viral sensation proclaiming good news worldwide.

After winning the bronze medal, Leal said, “Here I am with a second Olympic medal from the games. Once again, thank God I won a medal. I am very happy to be here.
